Abstract:

This archive provides a view of the day-to-day activities of a San Francisco printing company located in the Chinatown district. Comprises approximately 839 pages of invoices and receipts dated 1922-1924, and an additional 230 invoices and receipts from 1930-1931. Most of the receipts are from companies related to the printing trade: ink, type, paper, stationery, envelopes, rubber stamps, pencils and pens, bookbinding, linotype, electrotype and photo-engraving, etc. There are also receipts from suppliers of bicycles, leather, photographic equipment, glass, knives, and cigars.

Lee Shew Hung was born in San Francisco in 1882. At the age of four he was sent to China. He returned to the United States when he was fifteen to study in American schools. In 1905, he took up his father's importing and exporting business. After the 1906 earthquake and fire, he opened the Bock Ngar Chy Company, a firm of printers and stationers. Around 1914, he left San Francisco for New York City, where he was employed for a short time as a bookkeeper. Later he organized the Asia Noodle Company. He was president of the Hock San Society and the Lin Sang Society.
Bock Ngar Chy Printing Company was located at 920 Grant Avenue, San Francisco. Around 1914, the company advertised that they had 4 sets of Chinese type and advertised they they print Chinese-Enlgish calling cards. They eventually became the largest printing company in San Francisco's Chinatown.
